Great bit of WWII history. Stalin demanded supplies to sustain the Eastern Front; Churchill and Roosevelt were willing to appease him with supplies in order to keep Stalin and the USSR fully in the fight against the Nazis. The result was this disastrous convoy that was ordered to scatter due to the overblown threat of the great German battleship the Tirpitz. Once scattered the fleet was fresh meat to the Nazi submarine wolfpack and airplanes. This is a very compelling book that provides tremendous strategic insights into the war and deeply personal stories of death and survival in the ice floes of the Arctic. This is a super addition to the WWII knowledgeable reader and yet accessible to a military history beginner.
