Tommy Wilhelm (Robin Williams) is a salesman. An honest, hard-working guy who has lost his job, his girlfriend, and left part of his sanity behind as he heads to New York to pick up the pieces of his life. He's always been able to sell, but caught in a downward spiral, he must, in addition, face the father who never really understood him, while trying to balance his newly precarious existence. The Los Angeles Herald Examiner calls Saul Bellow "the most honored living American writer," and yet this stands as the only of his works adapted to film. "Seize the Day" as well as Mr. Williams and the rest of the cast (which features Glenne Headly "Dick Tracy," Jerry Stiller, and Tony Roberts "Annie Hall, Manhattan") received critical praise for this adaptation.

Pretty pedestrian film about a sad, unlucky sap that has some of Robin Williams' worst acting on record. Fielder Cook was a hack of a made-for-television film director and perhaps the most interesting takeaway from the film is witnessing how much RW required guidance to shine as an actor. ALSO: the film transfer on this DVD is terrible; low quality, washed out and grainy.

What were we supposed to get from this movie? It was a PBS T.V. movie, so if it had any educational facts, I must have missed them. If it was for entertainment, I missed that too. It was 2 hours of watching Robin Williams dig his own hole, and then climb down in it. It was also a complete waste of Glenne Headly's acting ability.
