After a wonderful night at the theatre, Thomas and Charlotte find themselves confronted with a corpse in the driver's seat of a hansom cab. Even more shocking--it is the body of a peer of the realm who had been decently buried the week before. While the doctor insists Lord Fitzroy-Hammond died a natural death, the Pitts find the situation anything but natural.

Corpses being dug up and appearing in strange places, in odd numbers, create a scandal in upper class Victorian London. They also completely puzzle Thomas Pitt and his wife Charlotte, who he tries to keep in the dark. Except that the first one falls off a hansom cab almost at her feet. Pitt's job is nearly on the line, and so is his marriage, for a while. The couple solve the case, and put their marriage together. The tone is wonderful, full of humor and scandal.

Another great book in the Thomas and Charlotte Pitt mystery series. I love Victorian period mysteries and this author never disappoint. Great story!! Outstanding!!!

I think this an excellent addition to the series. Some fine insights here--I love the way Somerset Carlyle works to educate the wealthy young men with political position, or with the possibility of obtaining it. The conversion of Dominic Corde is terrific. Sorry if my spelling is inaccurate.
