This is a book both for cooks and gardeners. She divides up vegetables into families and writes a beautiful essay introduction for each group. The details are insightful, informative and enticing, making me see old standbys in a new light and encouraging me to try new varieties. As a gardener, I love the way she writes poetically about flower forms, leaf structures and growing habits.

Deborah Madison knows her vegetables. I own a few of her cookbooks and this one was very informative. Detailed information on numerous varieties of our most used veggies with lovely pairing suggestions to make them even more versatile.
