A world-famous magician summons his family to an afternoon of magic and revenge. He is Emil Delacorte, a man paralyzed except for his eyes, and the novel's action is seen entirely through them as he sits in a room specially built to create illusions. It's a family matter. Delacorte's son, Max, who has succeeded the master, is slowly being poisoned by his wife, who wants the acts for her brother. There is also Max's agent to be taken care of for sleeping with Max's wife.

The first time I tried this out I had to put it down for a few days and ignore it. The second time I decided to ignore the premise which admittedly I found a little derivative. This time out I saw this one set story as a play. Or more precisely: a farce. It is a locked door mystery that is overly complicated and should not nor could not be taken seriously. Just one twist too many. However viewed as a comedy on the stage with me as the sole audience I did enjoy this. To be honest I did actually find myself laughing at the needless plot twists. I have never read Richard Matheson before. It reads easily flowing from chapter to chapter. But, please, let's hope his other books (such as the classics I Am Legend, Stir Of Echoes, Hell House) are with a far less complicated plot. In the right mood for plot twists and double dealing this was a rather good read. Mystery writers or their fans should get a kick out of this.
