Iraq War vet Ellie McEnroe has a pretty good life in Beijing, representing the work of controversial dissident Chinese artist Zhang Jianli - even though Zhang's mysterious disappearance over a year ago has put her in the sights of the Chinese authorities. But when her mum takes up with that nice Mr. Zhou next door,' Ellie decides that it's time to get out of town. An old Army buddy, Dog Turner, gives her the perfect excuse. His unstable brother has disappeared. Ellie's search will take her on a wild chase through some of China's most beautiful - and most surreal - places.'

This is the second in a series featuring Beijing-based Iraq War veteran Ellie McEnroe, but it is quite a good place to start. When a former Army buddy asks Ellie to track down his missing brother, believed to be in China, it lands her in a conspiracy involving eco-terrorists and a sinister biotech company. As a main character, Ellie is dynamic and wryly witty; the story has lots of well plotted twists and turns; and Brackmann gives an amazing sense of what it feels like to be in modern China, without going into overwhelming detail.
