Suitable for children. Background drawings are realistic, but character drawings are cartoonish and childish. Lost opportunity to learn about Japanese culture.

Shigeru Mizuki, 1922-2015. Celebrate the life of a beloved author by reading his award-winning manga. Nonnonba is about Mizuki’s childhood exploration into the spirit world, his relationship with his grandmother, and a picture of Japan during a major period of transition. Mizuki was a prolific artist working up until May of this year – he is particularly remembered for war themed manga (which share many of his experiences in World War II), and for yokai-themed manga (which celebrate his interest in spirits and monsters). I also highly recommend his most famous series, “Kitaro” which has become part of Japanese folklore, and “Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths” which is a semi-autobiographical account of the final weeks of a Japanese infantry unit in World War II.
