Although the premise of witchery, steampunk and fantasy was enticing this book was long on description, mostly of fog, and short on character development.
Not sure if I'll try another book by this author.

The story felt very much like a re-imagined, magical, steampunk Sherlock Holmes tale. This was enjoyable because of those references and because I love Sherlock Holmes but in the end it was still just an average, typical Victorian set adventure story with a female action hero and a brainy man duo.

Bah. I like other books by this author (under other names) but I just could not get into this! The old fashioned formal writing style alone was super annoying to try and make sense of.

Steam punk is NOT my thing. I tried because I love this author (under all pen names) but this book could not catch my interest.

While the story was fun, this book felt like the second in a series, not the first--there were a lot of times that things were not very well explained and I found myself guessing about what the author meant.

I would have liked more details about the differences between our "real" world and the author's alternate world. Unfortunately the lack of explanation made a lot of the imaginative things jarring in the storyline.

I'm hoping a second book in the series will explain a lot more.

Gripping, exciting read. Loved the Holmes tribute in the character of Archibald Clare, very cleverly written. Can't wait until the next book!!
