When a successful New York lawyer suddenly disappears without a trace, neither his wife nor his daughter, Julia, has any idea where he might be -- until they find a love letter he wrote decades earlier to a Burmese woman that he has never mentioned to either of them. Intent on solving the mystery and coming to terms with her father's past, Julia decides to travel to the village where the woman lived. A sentimental and romantic story. Good!

I disagree with the reviewers who say that this romance is indulgent and a box of tissues is required. It's a sensitive story of devotion that is unheard of in our world of high divorce rates and dysfunctional relationships.
The family secret is safe with me however as I don't understand the co... Read More »

Hmm, I wanted to like this book about enduring love, but found it difficult to respect the subject character who deserts his family in New York without a word and returns to his native Burma to his teen-age lover. The story elements, while providing a thoughtful theme, defied credibility and seemed to belong in the magic-realism genre. Further, the author’s device of presenting the entire back story in enormous expository chunks through a third party who “just happens” to come into the picture created a very confusing point of view. He supplied impossible, minute details that would have been far better served by an omniscient point of view.

When Julia travels to Burma to discover what happened to her father, a wealthy lawyer who left his family in New York City without even a goodbye, she discovers a love story that resonates with the reader. Beautifully crafted writing tells the heartbreaking story of her young blind father and the handicapped girl he fell in love with. Forced to leave Burma before World War II, he had to turn his back on his past. Have Kleenex ready for the ending. One can feel the difference between the Buddhist acceptance of life, and the Christian approach to conquering life as the story unfolds.

Agree a bit difficult to follow at times. But good story.

Deep and heart wrenching love story that spans the continent and 50 years. Beautiful rich characters who show time and distance will not get in the way of their love.

This was difficult to rate. At times, I absolutely loved the language and the story of Mi Mi and Tin Win, but at other times I thought the story was a bit over the top and language was too much. Very conflicting feelings. I've read some reviews that talk of this book being fairy tale-like, and I wholeheartedly agree. If you can buy into a fairy tale type of a story, then I believe you will enjoy this. If you are unwilling to suspend disbelief, then this may not be the story for you. I was both willing and unwilling, it seems. I'm going with the more positive attributes here though so overall, I thought it was a beautiful love story, and it makes one hope that the type of love described here is very possible.
