These classic gospel songs could have been jazzed up.

I've had many Charlie Haden CD's in my collection over the years and if I'm honest with myself about them -they just are not very interesting, song selections are always odd or wrong, Haden's writing is always a snore of worn out conventions. He is quite dapper as he ages -a sure sign of a flabby low end! Why do I keep buying them and checking them out? I think this CD 'Come Sunday' is the last straw. Thankfully. I'm finally done with Charlie Haden.

My rating is based on the assumption that this is a jazz recording and not as a Christian/gospel instrumental on the basis that both artists are identified with that musical genre. The pieces were played straight with very little improvisation...is this some sort of a deference to the church? I guess Charlie and/or Hank don't know much about Christian musicology particularly American Christian/gospel...they're alive! The set almost sound funereal or almost like a dirge except with the more notable fast pieces. Charlie should have followed the format of his crticially acclaimed recent album, Sphisticated Ladies where he infused vocals to great effect with some notable contemporary vocalists. Vocals is a major component in Christian music and Mr. Haden should have utilized this.
