The Thief is a seasoned pickpocket. Anonymous in a tailored suit, he weaves through Tokyo crowds smoothly stealing wallets from nameless, faceless strangers. He has no family, friends or connections, but his past catches up with him when his old partner offers him a job he can't refuse. Tie up an old rich man and steal the contents of his safe. Only afterwards does he learn the man was a prominent politician, who was brutally murdered after the robbery. This tangle might be too difficult for even the Thief to escape.

This was an interesting book to read. I was fascinated and had a hard time putting it down. But, I found that the fate of the main character leaves the reader in limbo.

A retelling in, a much darker tone, of Robert Bresson's great film Pickpocket. Here an existential loner and petty low profile pickpocket gets involved on one side with a woman and her son, but on the other with something of a ruthless Dr Moriarty style criminal mastermind. Swift, lean prose keeps moving the story along.

I don't consider this a mystery or even a crime novel. It is written in the first person by The Thief, who is a seasoned pickpocket and is going about his activities until he becomes entangled with a young boy and a gang. This is the first Japanese fiction in translation that I didn't like much.

Not a great one. Pointless clap trap.

A great little novel - stylish, atmospheric, realistic and loaded with believable details of the pickpocket's art. A good story, if a little twisted - ah-hahahahh! I like that it leaves room for and invites one's own thoughts. It moves quickly and makes a quick read. Like a good comic book or candy, it leaves you yearning for more.
