Cunningly evil bad guy. Only Vail can solve the case although he was fired from the FBI then brought back to solve this. Some suspension of disbelief required but all in all a good read

Yea! An author who understands the incredible importance of the first sentence: "As Mickey Stillson stared at the gun in his hand, he absentmindedly reached up and adjusted the fake ear that was his entire disguise and wondered how a born-again Christian like himself had wound up in the middle of a bank robbery."

Boom! Right away I am engaged. Fake ear? Huh. As it turns out, Mickey (with or without his fake ear) is pretty much irrelevant to the story. Doesn't matter, he's done his job. I am committed to The Bricklayer.

Despite the "official" reviews that are faintly disparaging of the plot and the main character, Vail, I enjoyed both and look forward to the next book.

Excellent book with fast paced plot twists & turns. Great characters & dialogue. The insider FBI knowledge is very entertaining.

"Former FBI agent Steve Vail quit the agency rather than compromise his morals; now they need him back to help stop a deadly extortion plot in which the stakes keep rising. The situation: a group calling themselves the Rubaco Pentad threatens to continue killing highly visible FBI critics unless their ever-increasing demands are met. Though Vail agrees to help, it's under a couple conditions, the first and foremost being that he's not reinstated in the agency. With the help of a comely deputy assistant director, Vail follows a dangerous trail to the head of the Rubaco Pentad. Written by a former FBI agent under an assumed name, The Bricklayer is the 1st in a series." January 2013 Thrillers & Suspense Newsletter

Move over Jack Reacher, here comes Steve Vail! Vail has his own unorthodox methods of solving crimes that leaves him at odds with law enforcement officials. But that's good because he solves the puzzles. An entertaining, good story. I was sorry when it was finished.

A complex, fast moving plot that will keep you reading. If you like the characters in series by John Sandford, Lee Child or early Dennis Lehane, you'll like these too.
