I was hoping to discover a new summer series. The author tried to weave two plots into one compelling story but it did not quite work. I think each plot alone could have made for good reading, but together felt dull and forced.

Enjoyable mystery set in Victorian England.

Every chapter or so, a new set of characters and negative actions are introduced, and then they are left hanging in limbo. The only consistent characters are the young couple who, I suppose, are to unravel the labyrinthine, incoherent plot. When it introduced the sex life of some of the "bad guys", I gave up.
