It's a day like any other for security chief Tracy Waterhouse, until she makes a purchase she hadn't bargained for. One moment of madness is all it takes for Tracy's humdrum world to be turned upside down, the tedium of everyday life replaced by fear and danger at every turn.

This Jackson Brody novel tours Yorkshire and refreshed my memory of the many locations I enjoyed in the past; from Beck Hole to Heptonstal.

This is my favorite of Kate Atkinson's books featuring Jackson Brodie's character. Not sure why the negative reviews. Have noticed over the years I've become more and more a fan of her writing and this is a lot due to her way with words and descriptions, etc. I can reread books by this author and get even more into the writing each time.

I'm reading my way through the Jackson Brodie books and faltered in my enthusiasm at this one, maybe because I lost interest in the many 1975 passages with the less than charming police. Still, I admire Atkinson's ability to pull together all these threads into a coherent story, and one that overlaps with her previous and future books. Thanks to the reader who commented here on the Emily Dickinson reference!

I must have read this in the past and forgotten it completely (between 2011 and 2018) but every page about Tracy sounds familiar. Nothing else is even slightly familiar. Characters are not engaging, time shifts and perspective changes are annoying, and the narrator seems to change, too for Jackson and a few of the spots that are "unconnected" until late in the 372 pages--that honestly felt like more than 600 pages.

If you are bored, and have nothing better to read, give it a try.

Should've realized what "irreverent means". Realized after about 20 minutes I don't like "irreverent" and did not read it.

Funny, irreverent, and seemingly unrelated events and people are expertly woven together in this tale of good intentions gone wrong. Atkinson at her best.

Loved it. Brilliant author. I've read all the Jackson Brodie books. The title is taken from an Emily Dickinson poem, I just found out.

Interesting book, but confusing. In the final analysis, I am not quite sure what happened to whom and why. I am, however, tempted to try another by this author because both the subject matter and the writing style were excellent. A gritty British murder mystery with corrupt cops and abused children.
