A rookie paramedic pulls a young woman from her totaled car, a first rescue that begins a lifelong tangle of love and wreckage. Sheila Arsenault is a gorgeous enigma -- streetwise and tough-talking, with haunted eyes, fierce desires, and a never-look-back determination. Peter Webster, as straight an arrow as they come, falls for her instantly and entirely. Soon Sheila and Peter are embroiled in an intense love affair, married, and parents to a baby daughter. Like the crash that brought them together, it all happened so fast. Can you ever really save another person? Eighteen years later, Sheila is long gone and Peter is raising their daughter, Rowan, alone. But Rowan is veering dangerously off track, and for the first time in their ordered existence together, Peter fears for her future. His work shows him every danger the world contains and how wrong everything can go in a second. All the love a father can give a daughter is suddenly not enough. Now Sheila's return may be a godsend -- or it may be the wrong moment for a lifetime of questions and anger and longing to surface anew. What tore a young family apart? Is there even worse damage ahead?

I usually love Anita Shreve, but found this one disappointing. I found the characters, especially Sheila to be shallow.

I've read Anita's other works - Pilot's Wife, Fortunes Rock and Sea Glass - and I don't believe Rescue has as much depth or interest. To me, it seems that this book was written to fill a quota and would make a better screen play.

A rookie paramedic rescues a young woman; falls for her; and marries her. They have a daughter.

Soon after the marriage falls apart.
After 18 years, they meet under unusual circumstances in a hospital where their daughter lay in ICU.

Heart-tugging and an occasional tear-jerker read!

Not as deep as the bookjacket review would like you to believe. But a very easy and very entertaining read. It goes quickly. Somewhat predictable, but I enjoyed it anyway.

I always like Anita Shreve, but wasn't crazy about the subject matter of this book when I started. She seemed too crazy, he seemed too straight. But as the story went on I liked it a lot - and could see the daughter as a solid blend of both. Worth the read, but not as absorbing as a Jodi Picoult book or anything.

Couldn't finish. Very superficial writing. No depth.
