Mr. Matheson’s writing contains the creepiness and horror that lie at the heart of mundane living. His horror writing is firmly set in the real world, in which ordinary men and women are thrust into extraordinary situations and forced to grapple with their own limitations as they confront difficult choices. From the chilling rise of greed, temptation and ultimate loss in “Button, Button” to the viciousness at the heart of “Girl of His Dreams” to the sad silliness of people who continue to perpetuate the species under unlivable circumstances in “’Tis the Season to Be Jelly”, Mr. Matheson’s writing points to how human beings struggle to live, love and adapt even when it would seem pointless to do so.

I honestly liked every story in this anthology (although liking is too mild a word for the frisson that feathered up my spine at certain moments). It’s horror writing at its best. It awes, humbles and frightens. Read them and you’ll understand why Mr. Matheson attained the title of Grand Master of Horror.

I really enjoyed reading all the stories, especially given that some were published as early as the '50's.

Button, Button is the only story worth reading.

Classic ideas and plots, but sounding a bit old and clunky now.
