This is an intriguing novel. It is set in the 1970's New York City theatre scene. In the form of a diary, the narrator, Edward Day, an aspiring actor, describes his relationships with fellow actors and in particular, with Margate, who shares his ambitions and appearance. Gradually, Day is revealed as an unreliable narrator and a narcissist who prospers as Margate's fortunes decline. It poses interesting questions about acting and emotional truth.
