In the hopeful 1950s, Frank and April Wheeler appear to be a model couple: bright, beautiful, talented, with two young children and a starter home in the suburbs. Perhaps they married too young and started a family too early. Maybe Frank's job is dull. And April never saw herself as a housewife. Yet they have always lived on the assumption that greatness is only just around the corner. But now that certainty is about to crumble. With heartbreaking compassion and remorseless clarity, Richard Yates shows how Frank and April mortgage their spiritual birthright, betraying not only each other, but their best selves.

Quite possibly one of the most bone-chilling and truly horrifying novels I have ever read. EVER. This is not a drama. It is straight up nightmare, a living and breathing heinous nightmare that pounced on the chest of 1950 suburbia and crushed every single resident to death, slowly. [shivers] Seriously, this beautifully horrific story captures every single thing that went maddeningly wrong with the 1950s in the US of A (and we’re STILL trying to fight off). Throughout the entire novel I was on the edge of my seat, nail-biting, wanting to scream/cry/shout/hug. Moreover, I can’t believe I loved it so much. It encompasses all that I despise in stories and yet, I loved this one so much. Wow, folks. Just Wow.

As Tennessee Williams describes Revolutionary Road: “If more is needed to make a masterpiece in modern American fiction, I am sure I don't know what it is.” Wow.
