This is an enthralling adaptation of Sergei Prokofiev's "Peter & the Wolf" orchestral piece. Historically, this piece is performed with its original story spoken with orchestral accompaniment. This version differs in that the narration is replaced with stop-motion animation. The design and production are beautiful and meticulous with myriad textures in nature and clothing. Scenes lit as if by a weak winter sun capture the harsh Siberian landscape. Since there is no dialogue or narration, silence is used to great effect as a storytelling device - we are free to imagine what Peter or other characters are thinking. This music is full of leitmotifs (recurring musical themes often by a solo instrument that represent a character or event) and even if you don't know this piece, I guarantee you'll recognize 'Peter's theme'. The nuances of animation and music suggest thought or feeling in a subtle way, such as the moment in which Peter conquers his fear... It is left for us to decide.
