Spencer Mallon was a college campus guru in the 1960s who attracted the undying devotion of his young accolytes. One fateful evening, he invited his most fervent teenage followers to attend a secret ritual in a local meadow. All does not go as planned, and at the end of the evening what remains is a gruesomely dismembered body. Years later, the horror of that cataclysmic event still grips the friends. Donald "Dilly" Olson is now a down-and-out ex-con; Jason "Boats" Boatman, long graduated into a life of serious crime, flinches from thoughts of what he calls "the dark matter; " Hootie Bly has become a mental patient; and the gorgeous Lee Truax, referred to as the Eel still harbors an unthinkable secret. But when a chance encounter stirs up long unsettled questions about the past, it is Lee Harwell, the Eel's high school boyfriend and now husband, who attempts to work out what happened to his wife and friends all those years ago. As the old friends try to come to grips with the past, they find themselves face to face with harrowing questions about the very nature of evil.

As compelling as it is bizarre, in A Dark Matter, Peter Straub examines an occult ritual experienced by a group of teens from nearly every perspective. An idea which is interesting in concept but frustrating at times when put into practice. We begin the story many years after the terrifying events that shape the story have already taken place, and so, since the climax of the story is only referred to as memories, the entire tale is resolution.

Straub builds an intensely layered story that makes you think about the fundamental philosophies of how we understand evil in modern times. If you're hoping for a mindless page turning thriller, you'll be disappointed as this novel is more subtle, ambiguous and intellectual than that. A Dark Matter is intensely creative but more strange and creepy than typically frightening.

The audio version is read by Robertson Dean who gives an intense narration.
