A great movie taking place in Mussolini's time. The acting is superb, the adaptation is excellent. It is a masterpiece.
The storyline can be easily summarized, but the 'story' as it appears on screen is unconvincing. What makes this worth seeing are the visuals and the character development -- though even here there are shortfalls, as with the motivation of Dominique Sandra's character. But Trintignant is pitch perfect. Still, the beautiful camera work and art direction make the film more of a collection of loosely connected tableaux than a convincing narrative. Bertolucci shares the same political outlook as the late Luchino Visconti, but seeing 'Il conformista' for a second time made me realize how much better a film maker Visconti was.
terrible, stilted dialogue. beautiful locations. not my cup of tea.
Pcychological embroglio with permanent betrayal
