The title of this film from Spain doesn't convey much. I don't know how I latched onto but it was, for me, a great find. It was 1940 and the story took place in a small farming town somewhere in Spain. Two small girls lived with their parents and one house maid, in a huge stone mansion. The small town itself has many ill-maintained buildings, which in some way gives the film character. The younger girl, 6-year old Ana, is in a sense the protagonist of the film. Good acting by all but fantastic acting by this 6-year old. The film is slow, hypnotic and you feel certain scenes are drawn out. But that the way director Victor Erice wanted it. If you are familiar with the background to the Franco era in Spain, you can probably read a lot of hidden messages throughout. I am not, but still find the film very engaging and deserving of future, repeated viewings. It is a must for serious fans of international cinema. Spanish with subtitles.
