Jorge Luis Borges declared The Invention of Morel a masterpiece of plotting, comparable to The Turn of the Screw and Journey to the Center of the Earth . Set on a mysterious island, Bioy's novella is a story of suspense and exploration, as well as a wonderfully unlikely romance, in which every detail is at once crystal clear and deeply mysterious.

Inspired by Bioy Casares's fascination with the movie star Louise Brooks, The Invention of Morel has gone on to live a secret life of its own. Greatly admired by Julio Cort#65533;zar, Gabriel Garc#65533;a M#65533;rquez, and Octavio Paz, the novella helped to usher in Latin American fiction's now famous postwar boom. As the model for Alain Resnais and Alain Robbe-Grillet's Last Year in Marienbad, it also changed the history of film.

No less than Jorge Luis Borges (a friend and countryman of the author) wrote of this book: "To classify it as perfect is neither an imprecision nor a hyperbole." Casares was an Argentine writer that I'd never heard of until picking this up because I liked the cover and saw that Borges wrote the prologue. I think going into this without knowing anything about it is the best way. It's a short, striking, and very original novel that bears some comparison with Borges and Kafka but has a particular atmosphere and voice all its own. Published in 1940.

Extraordinary short novel, an ahead-of-its-time science fiction classic.

One of the best books I have ever read. Beginning to end was just fantastic.

An early 40s, ie pre techno, version of virtual reality, mixed with intense erotic obsession and crime. Bioy Casares is a good friend and writing partner with JL Borges and you can see why Borges liked to discuss literature and collaborate with him.
