This was a good read and I definitely recommend it for teenagers. It was captivating and kept me interested the whole time.

Marchetta has created an excellent narrator. Yes, it's the typical teen-angst theme, but it goes with the territory/audience! Francesca is refreshing and, if she were a real person, someone I'd want to be friends with. Finally a courageous character who can dabble in the light-hearted flirty realm but also have a serious backbone. The end felt right, albeit a bit sudden. Maybe because I was reading through the book so fast, hooked on the story! Solid read.

Marchetta is the best YA author at creating smart, complex characters. Even the secondary ones have powerful back stories to which we are only given a glimpse. Here's set-up and one example: Francesca's mom Mia has become seriously depressed, throwing the family into chaos. Meanwhile, Frankie is one of 40 girls integrating a formerly all-boys prep school. The boys are aggressively resentful; she is beyond sad. The first student she shares an authentic laugh with is an apparent sociopath, who manages to reach through Mia's fog and actually help her. We never find out why this boy lives with his grandfather or where his parents are, and we don't need to. Brilliant.
