What history calls the "Battle of the Atlantic" was really a full scale war-within-a-war, fought from the beginning of hostilities in 1939 to the moment of cease-fire in 1945. During the first four years of the conflict, German U-boats sank an astounding fifteen million tons of Allied shipping, attempting to starve Britain into submission. Then in May 1943, new weapons and tactics dramatically turned the tide, enabling the Allies to contain and finally defeat the dreaded German "wolf packs." Scores of first-person accounts from survivors of both sides color this rousing historical narrative, which sheds new light on the longest and one of the most bitterly fought campaigns of the Second World War. Very detailed and in depth information into all that happened during this part of the war. I enjoyed reading it, however I did find that all of those details made for a slower read.
