Theresa is the town's most sought-after babysitter but she must cope with the challenges presented by the neighborhood's waiflike children, the tumultuous households of her employers, the mysterious compelling attention of an aging painter.
Told in the first person by Theresa, who is the only child of parents of modest means, who decide to live on Long Island so their beautiful daughter would be exposed to wealthy families and have a chance to better her life by marrying rich. At 15, she is the most sought after babysitter in the area. Her 8 year old cousin comes to stay for the summer and they share a room. Her cousin begins to get mysterious bruises on her body and Theresa has more and more contact with the father of one of the toddlers she babysits. Well read by Bernadette Dunne, but her voice is actually a little too old and refined for the character.
