In a sleepy Northern California town in the 1940s, Ed Crane, a humble barber, suspects that his wife Doris is having an affair with her boss. When a stranger comes into town hinting that there is a fortune to be made in investing in the new invention of dry cleaning, Ed hatches a blackmail scheme he hopes will make him rich and get him some revenge at the same time. His plan goes horribly awry when he accidentally commits a murder for which Doris is blamed, landing her in jail, and Ed at the mercy of big-city lawyer Freddy Riedenschneider.

Imagine a much more mundane, black & white version of Brazil or Jacob's Ladder. An emotionally-detached barber's impulsive act causes everything to unravel in ways he's helpless to influence. Compare & contrast the opening & final scenes, follow the pervading themes and notice the striking use of light & shadow. This is a slow drama that probably appeals for more artistic reasons than some might appreciate.

One of the better films from the Coen brothers. Shot in B/W, and with the story told by first person, chain-smoking barber played by Thornton, the film chronicles the fall of a small-town character from the mundane life of a barber to the electric chair. The plot is full of twists and turns, and the film includes a number of very interesting, and well acted, characters. It may be a tad slow for some but patience pays out for me.

Boring movie, very drawn out with no actual plot
