The "perilously beautiful" ( Boston Globe ) first story collection by the author of the acclaimed Pulitzer Prize-winning #1 New York Times bestseller All The Light We Cannot See .

The exquisitely crafted stories in Anthony Doerr's debut collection take readers from the African Coast to the pine forests of Montana to the damp moors of Lapland, charting a vast physical and emotional landscape. Doerr explores the human condition in all its varieties--metamorphosis, grief, fractured relationships, and slowly mending hearts--conjuring nature in both its beautiful abundance and crushing power. Some of the characters in these stories contend with hardships; some discover unique gifts; all are united by their ultimate deference to the ravishing universe outside themselves.

The Shell Collector is Anthony Doerr’s debut story collection, and it offers the same type of spellbinding experience as his other works, most notably his Pulitzer-winning novel, All the Light We Cannot See. In this volume of stories, he often explores the connection between humans and the natural world. He employs beautiful and poetic language to capture the splendor and mood of landscapes. His characters are often in search of a higher calling, and it is their profound link to nature that puts them on a quest to understand something primal and essential about themselves. Each narrative is finely crafted with exquisite descriptions and careful plotting, yet Doerr’s prose achieves a graceful fluidity, which allows you to feel swept up in the emotional journey of the characters in their pursuit of enlightenment. At this point in his career, Anthony Doerr deserves mention among such American literary greats as Toni Morrison and Cormac McCarthy. Read his work and be in awe of his brilliance.

Very different but kept my attention with his precise, descriptive writing.

I picked up this book because I read and enjoyed ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE. Every story is a gem; beautiful, exotic, sad, eerie, with many passages I returned to and then copied them in my notebook for future readings.

I am not a short story fan so if you share this predilection, be advised. Otherwise strong stories well written but I far prefer his full length novels.
