The magnificent writing style, one of the best in science fiction, cannot hide the disjointed nature of this novel. While the main story is quite interesting (precursor of "Inception"), and very original at the time, the numerous side episodes, philosophical digressions and extended dream sequences dilute the impact. The futuristic overpopulated world is very well constructed, but there is a distinct 1960s emphasis on cars and smoking.
