Well-produced and more interesting to me for its historical depiction of the Deep South during WWI and Damon's relationship with the young boy, who is learning about heroism, vulnerability, and community. Charlize Theron looks great but has a thin role, and while the writer tried, it's hard to make golf interesting as a sport.

If Bagger represents Krishna, is Charlize Theron Bima? ‘If you don’t care whether you win you will win, but you have to really not care.’ Pleasant, nicely crafted entertainment, but it would be a stretch to say powerful or profound.

Based on the Bhagavad Gita, with Matt Damon's character in the role of Arjuna, spiritual warrior. I find it very relevant to my own journey, as I work, to the extent possible, toward mastering my work-life, marriage, and...swimming. Very inspiring film!

Part of the magical black man series. (Also see "The Green Mile," "Bruce Almighty").

I enjoyed this DVD. The true story was strong. The characters had some depth. The actors did a great job! It was slow moving. This is not a action story. It shows how overcoming obstacles can help you to succeed in the end.

Robert Redford has built a reputation as a storyteller among directors, and he does not disappoint with this film. He tells the story of a golfer who turns away from the world after seeing the horrors of the First World War. The story isn't really about the game (a good thing, since golf is nothing more than a good walk wasted). It's about finding one's sense of self, being restored after being broken. Matt Damon is wonderful as the man who's retreated away from the world and slowly has to find his way back. Charlize Theron is ideally cast as his former lover, trying to save her late father's golf course dream in the midst of the recession. Will Smith has an enigmatic wisdom as the supernatural character Bagger Vance. Jack Lemmon narrates the whole thing in his homespun cranky style as an elderly version of the boy who finds himself watching events unfold in his home town. And Bruce McGill and Joel Gretch are well cast as the famous golfers who come in to town to play against Damon's character. Redford does a tremendous job weaving this appealing story about healing and about carrying on with life, setting the darkness aside. Even if it does involve golf.
