Spirits of the Water
Native Art Collected on Expeditions to Alaska and British Columbia, 1774-1910Book - 2000
This publication was prepared to accompany an exhibit organized by the Fundacion "la Caixa," Barcelona. Objects collected during Spanish expeditions of the late 18th century to present-day Alaska and British Columbia are in the Museo de America in Madrid, and are presented here together with objects collected on Captain James Cook's British expedition in 1778, by Russian explorers and scientists in the 18th century, and by North American explorers and anthropologists whose expeditions lasted until the early 20th century. Four essays set the context with discussion of politics, trade, collecting, and the function of art in Northwest Coast Indian culture. The catalog comprises 177 pieces, presented full-page in color, with thorough captioning. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
