"In a world where everyone takes wonders like magic spells and dragons for granted, Coco is a girl with a simple dream: She wants to be a witch. But everybody knows magicians are born, not made, and Coco was not born with a gift for magic. Resigned to her un-magical life, Coco is about to give up on her dream to become a witch...until the day she meets Qifrey, a mysterious, traveling magician. After secretly seeing Qifrey perform magic in a way she's never seen before, Coco soon learns what everybody "knows" might not be the truth, and discovers that her magical dream may not be as far away as it may seem..."--Publisher.

In a post on io9 en 2011 (https://io9.gizmodo.com/when-did-magic-become-elitist-5831053), author David Liss explored how magic as a literary theme became elitist and a power inaccessible to common mortals. "Witch Hat Atelier" makes magic democratic again. The protagonist, Coco, illustrates the almost magnetic attraction magic has on our imagination. She's a dynamic, courageous, and resourceful character. Seeing how she marvels when witnessing magic is charming. Nonetheless, magic accessible to anyone hints at grave dangers. Such power used in ignorance or with malice aforethought, especially on a large scale... This is the crux of series intrigue. Volume 1 illustrates these dangers without going into too much detail. However, the end of the V.1 suggests the coming action will explore the underlying ethics with greater depth, which I think will be fascinating, not to mention the stunning beauty of Shirahama's illustration. Fantastic! ;)
