A psychological thriller that reveals many layers of the strange and fragile Lizzie Borden, who stood accused of the infamous 1892 axe murder of her family in Fall River, Massachusetts. An unmarried woman of 32 and a social outcast, Lizzie lives a claustrophobic life under her father's cold and domineering control. When Bridget Sullivan, a young maid, comes to work for the family, Lizzie finds a sympathetic, kindred spirit.

good acting but otherwise the movies sucked.

Apparently Chloe Sevigny really wanted to play Lizzie Borden. I am not certain why. This film (per the extras ) is supposed to be some sort of statement about the lives and rights of women in the century. I am certain that many young women were controlled by abusive parents, but I am not certain that murder with an ax is the best means of independence. I found the film largely a waste of time and despite, the denouement, boring. Cannot recommend. Kristi & Abby Tabby

Amazingly the first movie with Kristen Stewart that I enjoyed. Her lack of personality actually works well for this movie that is completely carried on the shoulders of Chloë Sevigny. Chloë brings out a very different kind of Lizzie Borden that is still recognizable to the real life person. The interactions the cast has which each other shows a build up to the horrific events and occasional surprises.

Very good acting by the entire cast and an interesting approach to the story, but the anachronisms, lack of character development when it counted, and aimless final act spoiled it.
