After escaping New Jersey, the quintessentially punk Wren, a sparkplug in fishnets who lives dangerously downtown, moves to the city with the mission of becoming famous. When not pasting up flyers for herself or hanging at the Peppermint Lounge, she is getting involved with Paul, the nicest guy to ever live in a van next to the highway, and Eric, an aloof rocker.

"When I look at New York City now, that's the part that no longer exists."-Susan Seidelman
An early 80s film that was part of the emerging indie (and feminist) scene, "Smithereens" is a snapshot of a grungier, punkier, yet more romantic NYC. Shot in a loose, new wave-y style, the film follows the free-spirited Wren, who ping-pongs around the city having misadventures and between two men, an earnest Montana guy living out of a truck and a cool, sullen musician, played by perhaps the coolest punk of the 70s, Richard Hell, whose music is on the soundtrack, along with the Feelies and ESG. This has a bit of the non-plot style of Jim Jarmusch and the manic energy of Scorsese's "After Hours," but with a vibe all of its own. Director Seidelman would have bigger success with "Desperately Seeking Susan," but this is her signature film. The band the Smithereens took their name from the film. Given the deluxe reissue treatment by Criterion.
