“100 Must-Read Books About Life in Cults and Oppressive Religious Sects”
by Elizabeth Allen. posted January 27, 2017, at Book Riot

Dec 13, 2016

The FLDS may be the most notorious polygamist sect in North America. What proceeds in this book is the story of a courageous young woman who refused to be brainwashed by the cult. Forced into a child marriage at 14, Elissa Wall understood what was happening to her was rape, no more or less. The book delves into the politics that govern the cult's operations in rural Utah as well as in British Columbia, including how "prophet" Warren Jeffs put together and ripped apart families by his mere say so. How Jeffs was ultimately brought to justice is treated here, as well as Wall's dramatic testimony against him. The sect may finally be falling apart without firm leadership as Jeffs is serving a life sentence, but this is only after so much heartbreak as well as orchestrated brainwashing. The overriding message is clear - stay true to your beliefs, fight back and don't let anyone push you around.

This book was great very well written. What champs these women are.

Of course, the writing was not all that great. The girl is not a writer by profession. However, this story needed to be told. I found her mother to be a compelling character-wonder if she loves anybody? I felt really sorry for her, anyway.

Read this book after listening to Elissa interviewed on television.
Thanks for the insight into your shocking, sad polygamous marriage/cult. FLDS is also worth looking into to find out the truth of the matter. You will be very surprised.

Loveee this book!!! It is a must read of mine for sure!! Better than Escape, which was my favorite book prior to this on the subject...

I have to say that I didn't really enjoy this book. Although it was very eye-opening in regards to the cult's ideologies and life-styles, the quality of writing was just not there.

I would HIGHLY reccomend this book!! I finished reading this book this morning and I can't stop thinking about this remarkable story!! It takes the reader on a journey through the main character Elissa's life in a polygamous cult. I found this story particularily interesting since there is a group of this cult in British Columbia, Canada. This story is disturbing at times, but ultimately, inspiring. I would highly reccomend this novel to all of my friends!!

courageous story...makes the reader shakes his/her head in disbelief. Sometimes a bit too much detail, but stick with it. Quite satisfying
