In Nazareth, teenager Mary is betrothed to the local carpenter, Joseph. Mary is visited by an angel and told that she will fulfill a prophecy and as a virgin give birth to God's son, the savior of the world. Mary's pregnancy brings her the scorn of the community and Joseph struggles to believe her seemingly outlandish story. Meanwhile, a census forces every man and his family to return to his place of birth. Joesph and Mary set out on a long and arduous journey to Bethlehem. This story is based on the Biblical account of the birth of Jesus Christ.

One of my top 10 favorite movies of all time.

Dec 04, 2017

I thought this movie was very good and done well. It was directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen, Lords of Dogtown, Twilight, Miss You Already). I've liked Keisha Castle-Hughes, who plays Mary, since Whale Rider. Playing Joseph was a very early film role for Oscar Isaac; his big breakthrough came about 7 years later with Inside Llewyn Davis. The Nativity Story is rated PG for some violent content.

This is a great film! The characters are well developed, and the plot closely follows the Biblical narration. This film is sure to encourage viewers as it recalls the true meaning of Christmas. While there may be some portions not suitable for younger children, parents are encouraged to use their own discretion. In any case, this is a must watch!

Story adhered closely to the gave a good idea and "feel" of the period when Jesus was born. A good movie to watch with family

i loved the movie but in the end it wasn't so pieced together.
it was like, Jesus was born and the end. Well, because it's a "nativity" story- it's about the birth of Jesus not his life. It is very unique than other movies about the birth of Jesus. Out of 10 i would rate it a 8/10.

An excellent and uplifting Christmas film!

This movie is fantastic for teaching anyone, especially your older children, about how the story of Christmas really went. This film accurately portrays that it wasn't an easy thing for Mary and Joseph to bare the Son of God and that their journey to Bethlehem was a long and difficult one. An absolutely beautiful movie that's great to watch ANY time of the year.

Such a wonderful movie for all year round! Good acting, and I love this Bible story from history.

What would it have been like to be a young girl--a virgin--and to discover you would be pregnant and carrying the Messiah? What would it have been like to be Joseph, the man chosen to protect them? For accuracy, see Ray Vander Laan's "Herod the Great, Jesus the King: The True Christmas Story" DVD. But don't miss this one. PG. Disturbing scenes. English, French and Spanish languages, English and French subtitles. Choice of widescreen or fullscreen. Sterling performance by Keisha Castle-Hughes (youngest woman nominated for an Oscar for her performance in "Whale Rider").

And the rich, He has sent away empty. He has brought down rulers from their thrones ... and has exalted the who were humble ... Hallelujah ... " --Mary

From the announcement by an angel that the Messiah was about to be born, til the time of His birth, young lives were thrown into turmoil. Mary, a virgin, in a culture where not being a virgin was a disgrace punishable by death, a Joseph, a man betrothed to Mary, likely expecting a normal life, would soon be the protector of a Child prophesied to Rule--and another, earthly king (Herod) would be trying to kill Him. Dreams, visions, leading by God--this movie takes it to another level of peering--as well as we can--into what kind of world the Messiah entered, and who His parents were. PG. Accurate more in some details than others (correctly shows Joseph proposing by offering a cup of wine--the roots of our communion--probably not correctly showing a wood, rather than a rock-hewn manger). Valuable for the way it brings the nativity--home. See Ray Vander Laan's DVD "Herod the Great, Jesus the King: The True Christmas Story" for accuracy. But "The Nativity Story" is a valuable movie to watch.

Frightening or Intense Scenes: The simple scene of Mary off to visit Elizabeth cuts to people along the roadside crucified by the Roman government. Zero gratuitous violence--that's how it was under the Romans, and why the Jewish people longed for their Messiah to come. A film parents might want to preview before watching with children. Rated PG for violence. Even so, a brilliantly worthwhile film.
