If anyone out there remembers The Wormwood Dog & Monkey Cinema (the best movie popcorn on the planet - situated on Gottingen and Barrington Street before that) - THE HERO is the kind of a movie that would have packed that art house on a hot Saturday night.

The movie is a thoughtful, quiet, quirky kind of study on life and loneliness and coming to the end of one's own rope and trying to twist out a few more strands of forget-me-knot hope. It is a story of loneliness and not giving way to despair.

It isn't a typical kind of story. It isn't a neat kind of story. It is a kind of a head-scratch of a story that leaves you wondering just what comes next. It a story of a man learning how to work with the hand that fate has dealt him.

Think about Jeff Bridges in CRAZYHEART. Think about Mickey Rourke's THE WRESTLER. Think about Lee Marvin in MONTE WALSH.

In the hands of another, less competent actor, this movie would have dropped like a frost-heaved tombstone. But Sam Eliot kicked this role right out of the park.

Some folks are going to think this movie sucked over-ripe bananas, but I really enjoyed the heck out of this flick.

Slow, dreadful, boring movie. Sam Elliott must have been hard up for a paycheck.

If only we could see Sam Elliot in (real movie) "The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then the Bigfoot." But I doubt that any library is going to buy that one any time soon.

Excellent! It's a definite pick for actors who know what it's like to have been on The Top, fallen down and then been given the opportunity to See The Light once more at a time when you're whole life is in flux and nothing seems certain, including your Life.

This film was written for Sam Elliott, who seems to finally be getting his due in Hollywood. He plays an old actor who has terminal cancer as it chronicles events in his life before and after being given a Life Achievement Award. Some may think it slow and lacking a story, but this is all about Elliott, it's a brilliant performance. His wife of 35 years, Katherine Ross, also appears in it. Give this a chance. It's terrific. Hopefully he'll be honored in 2019 with an Oscar. He's paid his dues and he deserves it!

Slow movie. The story could have been better, but I enjoyed watching and listening to Sam.

Lacking all around, the story, the shots, the scenes. The story is an old man fantasy about sleeping with young woman and using drugs to be cool. So out of touch with anything.

Very slow moving film, without a point to the story. Ejected the DVD after about 30 minutes.

This was a slow burn and as expected Sam Elliott was being Sam Elliott. He was playing an ageing actor and voice actor with the golden voice, so seemed somewhat biographical. There was a one scene that showed an emotional range than I had ever seen him do before, as he was dealing with his cancer diagnosis, dealing with finding work and reaching out to his estranged daughter. Sounds like it would be a more interesting plot, but perhaps i was too tired (as i fell asleep before the ending), but did not make me want to review it, as I had seen most of the 97 minute film.
I did also find that the script was weak and uneven and somewhat unreal.
