In a colorful yet gritty 1970s Boston, Justine, a mysterious American businesswoman, and her wise-cracking associate Ord arrange a black-market weapons deal in a deserted warehouse between IRA arms buyer Chris and shifty South African gun runner Vernon. What starts as a polite if uneasy exchange soon goes south when tensions escalate and shots are fired, quickly leading to a full-on Battle Royale where it₂s every man (and woman) for themselves.

I'm not sure how this movie has been so overlooked; it's a screenwriter's dream. Full of fast-paced action, witty dialogue, memorable characters, and sparse set locations, this film really makes the most of its tight budget and its actors. if you like movies like Reservoir Dogs and Layer Cake, you'll get a real kick out of Free Fire (2017).

Amateurish, unfocused, uninteresting, gave up after 10 minutes ...

Absolutely loved this movie. Director, writer and editor Ben Wheatley does a great job here. I had trouble getting my partner to watch this once I told it her almost all of it is taken up by a gun fight in a warehouse, but she watched it and enjoyed this often incredibly funny film as much as me. I suppose in a way it's Wheatly's `Gunfight at the OK Corral' but with the gunfight being almost the whole film (instead of the climax, as in the John Sturges pic) and with no real good guys.

This was a stylish and interesting movie of a gun deal gone wrong. Executive producer was Martin Scorsese which may have helped make this film as compelling as it was.
The acting was of some fine quality with worthy talents of Brie Larson (Room - 2015; Kong: Skull Island - 2017; and Captain Marvel - currently filming), Cillian Murphy (Transcendence - 2014; The Dark Knight Rises - 2012; Inception - 2010), and Shartlo Copley (District 9 - 2009; Elysium - 2013; Maleficent - 2014; Chappie - 2015).
Lots of shooting involved, but more out of self survival and greed, rather than just for the sake of shooting. The Eleven minutes bonus at the end of the DVD, was worth the watch, as it has some interviews by the director and key players.

Yes, like all the other comments.... this is just a huge indoor shoot-out. Having said that, it's an entertaining shoot-out, not your standard bang, bang - you're dead movie. It's great to see that the writer/director accomplished the task of keeping a 90 minute shoot-out interesting.

Forgettable bloodbath, with a good preview.

From the preview, I gathered that Free Fire was a dark-comedy/action piece ... but IMO all it amounted to was an amusing 70s period flashback (for what I remember of the 70s) with a vague story, a confusing 60+minute shootout with guns that barely needed reloading and had an endless supply of ammo, all atop a little bit of character development. Quentin Tarantino probably had a ball watching this for the 70s-camp setting and because it was bad in ways that his films fall short. I've been a Cillian Murphy fan since 28 Days Later -- pretty much, if he's in a film I'll watch it -- which is largely why I picked this up. Additionally I was pleased to find Michael Smiley, but otherwise I don't think I recognized anyone else in this film ... and had it more actors who's work I enjoy maybe this would have been more engaging, and yet Free Fire didn't particularly hold my attention. Conclusion: Meh.

Why make this movie? A 90-minute gun fight where half the time you can't figure out the action to tell what is going on. Both Sharlto Copley, who plays the South African selling assault rifles, and Cillian Murphy, who plays the IRA soldier who thought he was buying machine guns, are good. Everything else is forgettable.

Surprisingly disappointing. There were exactly 3 scenes which I found to be at least somewhat funny and therefore memorable but otherwise I just glad I didn't spend any money on this completely predictable-from- beginning-to -end caper. Still love Cillian, Armie and Brie, just not in this movie.

There were a few moments in this film where I thought Samuel Beckett had rewritten "Reservoir Dogs," but with better dialogue and more shooting. A gun deal goes south in a Boston warehouse and a bunch of criminals dressed in 70s clothes have to shoot it out. Almost all of the action takes place in the warehouse and it plays out in real time. These elements add to a somewhat conventional storylline, as does the fine cast and the groovy fashions. Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy, Armie Hammer, Sam Riley, and Noah Taylor star. Directed by Ben Wheatley, whose cockeyed take on genre films also includes "Kill List," the Ballard adaptation "High-Rise," and whatever the hell "A Filed in England" was.
