In 1979, the Marxist New Jewel movement (NJM), led by Maurice Bishop, overthrew the government of Grenada and immediately sought ties with Cuba. Although the Carter administration was apprehensive about the spread of communism in Latin America, it opted to take a more delicate approach to Grenada than did President Ronald Reagan, who authorized the invasion of Grenada - codenamed Operation Urgent Fury - on October 25, 1983.
