Thanks in part to Ronald Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative ("Star Wars") and the United States' failure to ratify the SALT II treaty, the threat of nuclear war loomed large in the American consciousness during the early 1980s. In 1983, a group of children testified before a House committee to express their hopes that their fears of nuclear war would never become reality.
