In 1952, former president Fulgencio Batista overthrew the existing regime in Cuba. Although Batista had been a popular figure due to his progressive policies, during this period in office he ruled with little regard for the poor. In 1959, Batista was overthrown by Marxist revolutionary Fidel Castro.
