U.S. and British Troops Airlift Supplies Into Berlin Ca. 1948Streaming Video - 1948
After World War II, Germany was divided into four zones controlled by France, Great Britain, the United States, and the Soviet Union. Although Berlin fell within the boundaries of the Soviet-occupied territory, it was treated as a special case and shared equally between the four powers. In 1948, tension between the former Allies and the Soviet Union prompted the Soviet Union to initiate a blockade of supplies into Berlin. In response, the United States and Great Britain began airlifting food and supplies into the city. The Berlin airlift lasted 11 months.
